A strange cloud over Lazy Mountain in Alaska has sparked an investigation over concerns it could be a Russian weapon or a UFO.

On Thursday, photos of the mysterious gray plume went viral on Facebook, leading some to believe it was aliens or a meteorite.

The cloud attracted so much attention that Alaska skydivers and the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center launched an investigation into a possible plane crash.

A helicopter and a rescue team were sent to search the area, but found “nothing suspicious…no sign of a crashed aircraft”.

That hasn’t stopped the theories circulating on the Internet.

“We also saw it on the way to school this morning. Very creepy!” one user wrote on the Alaska Buzz Facebook page.

“Looks like a meteor. I wonder where he landed,” said another.

“Could it be a satellite? This is so weird,” wrote a third.

“No wings,” said a fourth.

But US officials provided a more mundane explanation for the strange phenomenon, revealing that it was actually a contrail from a commercial aircraft.

“Further investigation revealed that a large commercial aircraft was flying in the area around the time the photos and videos were taken,” officials said.

“The aircraft was contacted and informed that the flight is proceeding normally on the way to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.

“Military personnel believe the photographs and video footage show the contrail from a commercial aircraft combined with the rising sun, which together create a unique atmospheric spectacle.”

It comes after a pilot filming one of the famous Tic Tac UFO encounters revealed shocking new details of the encounter to US senators.

Secret evidence provided to lawmakers about the 2015 incident shows the military thought the ship was part of his training.

The Black Vault released heavily redacted statements about the incident this week.

They read: “Toward the end of one of the night flights (redacted) that was flown while at sea, he and his pilot detected an air contact via (redacted) coming from the east and heading towards the ship.

“Initially thinking it might be a simulated consultant aircraft as well as part of the COMPTUEX script, he took the (edited) block for further investigation.

“Contact was about at (redacted).”

He continues: “With a stable track file, the towing aircraft determined that it was not a ‘false hit’ and they were able to get a lockout with (redacted), which also indicated that the vehicle had (redacted).”

“This became clear through the (redacted) pilot maneuvered (redacted to maintain (redacted)”.

Three videos - one filmed in 2004 and two in 2015 - were leaked to The New York Times three years ago.

Pilot Chad Underwood filmed a 2004 video showing the USS Nimitz “Tic Tac” incident.

It happened during an aircraft carrier group exercise in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico, when a total of six pilots noticed a strange sight.

They described seeing a Tic Tac-shaped object about 40 feet long hovering about 50 feet above the water.
