AFTER two years of searching for new and unexplored holiday destinations, there are not many corners of the country that have not been abandoned by the masses.
However, the Lincolnshire Wolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty tucked away between Lincoln and the Skegness coastline, might just fit the bill.
In a virtually empty corner of the county, the Wolds offers endless rolling hills, quaint villages and rustic pubs as well as walking, biking and plenty of adventure.
Our launch pad for exploring this often overlooked gem, Landal Kenwick Woods is a village of lodges surrounded by lush trees and on the edge of a hotel complex and golf course.
It’s sort of a central park going back to basics, with very similar adventure-style entertainment and amenities, but all tuned in favor of simplicity.
Yes, there is a huge indoor pool, but there are no slides or a breakwater. Instead, the tranquil location lets you entertain yourself on your own - and, unlike other popular resorts, you don’t have to queue.
What’s more, this simpler approach is reflected in the bargain price - three nights cost less than £600 for our family of four.
We’ve taken our tireless five- and nine-year-olds to hike the narrow back roads and rain-swollen fords of the Wolds, but it’s not just families that come here.
Accommodation at Landal Kenwick Woods ranges from gigantic cabins with enough space for eight people to our two bedroom set with one double and one double room.
AX THROWING
Impeccable dog-friendly cabins with hotel-standard bedding, a large kitchen with enough equipment to prepare regular feasts, and a huge deck, the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea on sunny moments.
But the biggest hit in our family was the private jacuzzi, hidden from the neighbors, where we relaxed with champagne and an appletizer - plastic flutes are provided.
A ten-minute walk from here is the main transport hub with the Kenwick Park Hotel, a well-equipped gym and a full spa where guests can enjoy free foot spa, hot tub, Jacuzzi, ice baths, saunas and steam room.
The red-brick hotel goes relatively unnoticed amid the picturesque countryside, which includes a far-out 18-hole golf course.
It’s set for a major refurbishment so the decor is getting a bit of a refresh and the restaurant is great for a casual dining experience with standard pub food cooked well and a lively bar atmosphere on weekends.
Cabins are separate from this area, although all amenities are shared and include activities such as zorbing sessions where guests run like hamsters in a huge inflatable ball floating on the water.
For enterprising youth, there is an open center with lessons in shelter building and forestry crafts, as well as archery and ax throwing.
You can, of course, lose older kids for days on end, but you need to save time to take advantage of the amazing hiking trails that wind through the grassy hills.
Boots on, dog ready, we headed for the Viking Trail, a historic trail that stretches from Rutland to the Humber.
Even in the cold and damp, it was hard not to marvel at the same astounding views that the invading Scandinavians soaked up as they climbed the same trails more than 1,000 years ago.
Today there is even more beauty to admire. Passing through small villages such as Belchford in the south of the Wolds, we gazed at the impressive Lincoln Cathedral, a magnificent Grade I listed building and perhaps the most remarkable example of Gothic architecture in the UK.
A 20-minute drive from here is the picturesque and secluded village of Tilby, with Cotswold-style thatched cottages, rustic greenery and an old teahouse.
It’s safe to say that the Wolds have worked their magic, tiring us all out in a corner of a world we knew nothing about.
And if you’re looking for an action-packed getaway with enough fun for families of all ages, then Lendal Kenwick Woods is the place for you.

By 9 pm we were returning to our cabin with two exhausted children napping in the back.
Time to get into a hot bath?
