He ran into the teenager, whose name could not be released for legal reasons, on the stairs outside the apartment.

Gillis then stabbed her with a blade, leaving two six-inch scars on her neck.

Police called to the street noticed Gillis with a knife in his hand before he dropped it.

The first offender, Gillis, from Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, appeared before Hamilton Sheriff’s Court and confessed to assault with injuries and permanent disfigurement last July.

He also pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a knife.

The court was told that the girl was taken to Wishaw General Hospital after the attack, but she left the hospital before she received treatment.

A pregnant woman was also taken to the hospital during a street fight.

Deputy CFO Neil Thomson said: “Gillis was seen walking down the street with a large knife in his hand.

“He approached a 17-year-old girl. It is not clear how she is connected to the riots, but there was an incident involving her and Gillis on the stairs leading to the apartment.

“As a result, he stabbed the girl in the neck with a knife.

“The police saw Gillis walking towards his house with a knife in his hand and then dropped it.”

The prosecutor added: “The girl decided not to stay in the hospital so that the wounds were properly examined and treated.

“The only medical evidence comes from a nurse who said she would be scarred.”

Stephen McQuillan defendingly said: “A pregnant neighbor was attacked and in distress, and my client went to help her.

“This background does not justify what happened next. This is a very serious incident.

“He understands that this case could have a significant impact on his freedom.”

Sheriff Liam Murphy delayed Gillies’ sentencing until next month and continued with bail.

He said, “You have pleaded guilty to a very serious crime, specifically assault with a knife.”
